Baptisia 'Dutch Chocolate'

Baptisia 'Dutch Chocolate' (PP#23872) has uniquely colored purple flowers with a slight yellow midrib that take on a chocolate colored appearance, flowering in early summer on long spikes over a mound of blue-green foliage that grows 3' high and 2 to 3' wide. This Baptisia is a Proven Winners perennial and part of the Decadenceā„¢ Series of Baptisia plants. The unique chocolate color combines best with brighter flowers such as oranges and yellows so plant it with early flowering daylilies, bright yellow Iris, or with yellow Baptisia for the best effect.

Baptisia is a member of the legume family so it has a pea-like flower and rounded leaves like sweet peas and lupines. They grow to shrub-like proportions but die back to the ground each winter. It grows from a very deep taproot and will develop a massive root system over time, but can be moved successfully when dormant in the spring and fall.

Height: 30 - 36" Spacing: 24 - 36" apart
