Pic of the Day--Night Before Christmas

Hi All--The variety Night Before Christmas is very attractive, even striking, for the first half of the season. Then, like many white centered varieties, it begins to deteriorate and ends the season looking quite ratty. The plant in our Friendship Garden has done very well, considering this. It was a very good sized 25x14 when it was planted in 2006 and grew to 29x11 this summer. That puts it right in line with the registration listing of 30x18 but a long way from the 63x25 size given by Zilis. Night Before Christmas does benefit from slug protection.

I was just noticing the other day how well my NBC was holding (compared to everything else...). I didn't have any of the white centers melt out, very little slug activity (and I didn't do sluggo in this bed), and not much of it going dormant either yet. Mine tends to go a little green in the centers of the newest growth later in the season. Given the fact it was frozen back to the ground after leafing out in April, I am really pleased with its performance this year. It also doubled in size since last year. I like it!

I love the way NiteB4Xmas looks. I had one revert to all green, so I gave it to my neighbor to fill in a shady spot she had in her garden. I think I have two more planted around here and they look great! :)
