Pic of the Day--Hope

Postby Hank Zumach » Dec 08, 2007 12:14 pm

Hi All--In these daily musings about different hosta varieties, I have often groused about the differences in the sizes listed in the registration information and the sizes of the plants growing in our garden. I'll probably continue to do that because there are obvious inaccuracies in some of the registration information and the Powers That Be should find a way to make corrections. We rank and file collectors can always Hope.

Having said that, today's variety, Hope, is a good example of how much size difference there can be in plants of the same variety that come out of a different gene pool. We obtained the two Hopes from different sources in 2002 and have had them planted side by side since then. As you can see from the photos from 2002, 2004, and 2007, the one plant has become much larger than the other even though the growing conditions are identical. (I did move the larger plant a very short distance this past summer) The registration listing for Hope is 8x3. The smaller plant is about that size and this past summer the larger one was about two inches taller and had nearly twice the volume.

I've had my 'Hope' since spring of 2003 although it's been moved a couple of times. I like it a lot - a real perky little thing. The marker is about 2 1/2" wide at the stop for scale. Here is was mid-July.

I'm not sure whether there's another thread for 'Hope'. I thought I had posted more recently than 2007, but here's a pic from 2014.

I planted my entire 'Baby Bunting' family in a large pot this year because I anticipated they would be disturbed for a sidewalk reconstruction project, but that's been postponed at least a year. Anyway, it was doing well early in the season, but has been attacked by slugs later. Like many of my mini hostas in pots, I plan to put these in permanent pots that I can sink into a larger planter for the summer and winter in my veggie garden w/o disturbing the plant roots.

2015 - July 03.
