Hosta Sale - 20 to 30% off selected plants!

Postby Chris_W » Jul 02, 2012 12:35 pm

Hi Everyone,

We just started a hosta sale with 20 to 30% off selected plants for immediate shipping :) You can check out all of our sale items here, including sale prices on Revolution and Rocket's Red Glare in honor of the 4th of July:

ONLINE SALE ITEMS

We are also shipping bearded Iris for summer planting and our bearded Iris listing is posted too, plus when you order $25.00 or more of any items we will take an extra 10% off all the iris:

SUMMER BEARDED IRIS LISTING

This is the best time to plant bearded iris, so they will get established for next year, and they are selling quickly so don't wait too long on these. :)

Finally, if you are in the local area or feel like taking a road trip, we are having a sale on all of the pre-potted plants in the nursery of 25% OFF! We have a huge selection of perennials already potted and ready to go and they are still looking great. This sale will go on all through July on the pre-potted plants purchased here at the nursery near Cement City, Michigan, south of Jackson (about an hour drive from Lansing, Ann Arbor, Battle Creek, and Toledo and about 2 hours from the Detroit area, Kalamazoo, or Fort Wayne). We really give our plants tough love to make sure they can survive through heat and drought and the plants in the nursery are holding up really well. Here are pictures just taken of the plants here, and I'm sure they'll be even happier to get out of these pots and into your great garden soil :)

Thanks for checking things out and thank you for your past and continued support!

'June Fever' is gorgeous. I love mine. The leaves are very shiny and it truly stands out.

Wow, things are looking great at the nursery, Chris.
And time remembered is grief forgotten,
And frosts are slain and flowers begotten.....

Looking good, Chris! I love seeing what you are doing with the place... looks like lots of well-grown plants.

Aren't those smaller, clumping mondara just stars right now?! I'd given up on the leggy, mildewy, invasive monarda... then tried one more time with the "Petite..." and such and wow - great purple pinks, long blooming, solid color over the top of the clumps... look great in my border, too...

And those are some mighty fine hostas on sale... I started to make a recommendation list, but it just got too long. There's even one I've never picked up that I thought about - Luna Moth. I haven't seen a mature plant of that June sport... something Ruffles or somesuch? Is it more of a curiosity, or does it actually get attractive? I suppose that's a dumb question for somebody who is trying to sell it... but you always find polite ways to be candid!

Chris,

Your place looks great. I must make a road trip sometime. I'd like to organize an overnight bus trip or caravan for our local club to SE MI and Hallson's and the MSU Hidden Lake Gardens would be must see destinations. I did place an order including Ripple Effect which seems like a wild and crazy June sport. Unruly and a bit open, but I have never seen a mature plant. I can't wait to get my plants. I hope shipping in this heat wave is OK.

Thank you for your orders! Shipping during the heat of the summer has been fine, but we'll hold off and ship next Monday as it is supposed to cool down some next week. We had one package a few weeks ago that may have had a couple plants heat damaged so we replaced them, but it is very rare.

I'll try to post some more pictures of the nursery (have a couple from earlier today to add). It was nice to have our Ag inspector stop by last week and when I asked him what he thought he said our nursery was the best he's seen. Makes us feel good to hear that :) I told him how we start them slow and water sparingly so they can toughen up to get through the heat and drought easier. Unfortunately a lot of the bigger growers are all about the science of container growing so they can produce the best looking container grown plant as quickly as possible for really quick sales. Those plants are fast sellers off the truck but have a really short shelf life and need water two to three times a day to keep them going. Unfortunately that doesn't translate to a better GARDEN plant as those plants really languish once they are out on their own. We really feel that you need to balance things so that they grow okay in the containers and then explode after they are in the ground which gives a much better experience for the home gardener.

Thank you for the comments on the nursery. I took a few more pictures and will probably start a thread on The Garden Bench. Things did just fine through 3 100+ days, and I think I only had a few losses, some hardy geraniums that first got too dry, then too wet, then lost all their leaves. They'll go back in the ground and most will be fine later, they were just too overly stressed one way then another. That's part of the problem if you water too much - I'd rather see everything wilt a little bit. One way I judge things is whether or not the stems are wilting. If it is just leaves, that tends to be heat stress and I let those go. If the leaves AND the stems are wilting, they need water, and then we try to wait until the heat passes at the end of the day or things get way too steamy in black pots. We have some overhead sprinklers that can be turned on to sort of cool the whole nursery, too, without overly soaking anything so that helps a lot.

And thank you for the orders that came in. We shipped out the first of them today and really appreciate the business. Local business here dried up as fast as the lawn did, so the orders are very helpful :D

Anytime Chris-glad we could all help. Today was only in the 80's here, thank goodness. All my Hostas fared very well-lost 3 astilbes tho., Cut them to the ground-they'll be back next year. Hopefully the rest of the summer will not repeat that horrid heat wave.
