The latest Hallson Gardens intro - Hosta 'Summer Rainbow'

Postby Chris_W » Jan 03, 2015 6:06 pm

I'm busy adding all the new hostas to the 2015 catalog and wanted to share this one a little early as it is the latest Hallson Gardens exclusive introduction called Hosta 'Summer Rainbow':

http://www.perennialnursery.com/hosta-s ... inbow.html

Host Registry - http://hostaregistrar.org/detail.php?id=5033&Variety=Summer%20Rainbow
MyHostas Database - http://myhostas.be/db/hostas/Summer+Rainbow
Hosta Library - not in the Library yet

This one originated from a streaked Hosta 'Winter Snow' found here at our nursery and was developed by Dave Bowe (Dr. Dave) who isolated this stable beauty. It went into TC in 2010 and we've been growing them here for the past 2 summers and are really impressed with their growth rate. It is basically Winter Snow with a dark green center but we think it will become one of the largest sports in the Sum and Substance family with so much dark green in it. The margins are also really wide, much like the original Winter Snows that came out of Winterberry Farms years ago.

You won't find this one for sale anywhere else but Hallson Gardens :)

Enjoy!

Chris

Very nice. I'm wondering how this might look by 2018 in my garden for the AHS convention... Where to put such a big boy?

Thanks guys, and David, considering how big that Sagae of yours has grown I would hope you have a really big spot available if you want to try this one. :)

Summer Rainbow today - this was added this season. I don't know what the plant at the top is - it's not on my garden map (I need to hunt for a label).

I hope that it grows great for you Ed! We've been really impressed with it, and hopefully more people will learn about it too. Next year we will be dividing some of the best ones with the widest margins to keep them going, though the vast majority of the ones we have are really showing great color already.

Thanks, as always, for sharing your pictures :D

Very nice. But out of reach for me until it gets to Canada. Probably too large for the space I have available anyway.
