Arbor Day

God has cared for these trees, saved them from drought, disease, avalanches, and a thousand tempests and floods. But he cannot save them from fools. ~John Muir

Happy Arbor Day!! :-)

I guess I never really "got" this holiday... every year we'd celebrate - my granddaddy and I would cut down a tree and make an arbor out of it...

Ogrefcf, not to criticize but that nice looking JM is WAY to close to the house. Think about the mature span and put it, at the very least, half that from the house (if possible).

Thanks for the advice. Not criticizing at all just trying to help. I think the tag said 12x12, I need to find it. I got it from Home Depot and they have everything tagged so poorly. I do realize it close, but choose this one because most the branches are growing away from the house. I figure i'll just prune the rest. Here's a side view of it.

Guess I'll go find the tag and reevaluate. Thanks!

Nice tree... so I hate to suggest replanting... but...

Great excuse to extend that bed... I do believe the tag means 12 feet high and 12 feet diameter... I'd maybe fudge a little by pruning the back side, but not quite this much... Some trees... fruit trees, for example... can appear cool when done "espalier"... but I think the form of the JM is so lovely, I don't think I'd want to prune it that severely...

What JGH said about the JM. I cringed when you talk about "pruning the back side".
I'm thinking "extend the bed" also. A nice sweep of a curve to extend in front of the white fence would really set that red JM off nicely.......and they transplant easily. Just sayin! :D :D :D

Lovely tree :D

If I could find it here it would cost around the salary for 2 weeks

See Owen, they put pressure on you for expending a bed

I'm all for expanding to be honest, but the post you see in the picture is the post for my gate, so no expanding there. I've got another site in mind. Just up (to the left) from there I have a dwarf spruce that's in a part of the bed that goes out and is on the corner of the house. It's recently planted so I might be able to switch the two and give the Maple the corner of the house and some more room. Thanks again for the suggestions everyone.

Okay, sorry for making this the plant Owen's tree thread, but here is the new spot I am thinking.

I'll switch the Dwarf Spruce and the maple. Gives the Maple a lot more room and breaks up the green with some red in the middle. Thanks again everyone for the suggestions!

Arbor Day in Joplin Missouri was celebrated by the giving away of thousands of trees to replace those lost by homeowners affected by the tornado of May 22, 2011, and replanting of those lost in the city parks. Several orginizations were involved including the Arbor Day Foundation and Audubon.

Then you have to place it just by the stones or better a bit father than the stones
:hmm: You can go the other way, place it where it is, but a bit closer to the house, that way it will not get a full crown, but a half and sort of grow out of the bricks.

Sort of when we are trailing roses, they might be big round bushes if planted in free space, but planted close to a wall we call then bushy climbers

Well, got it moved. Got it about 4-5 feet from the house and now it's on a corner so no house directly behind it. My wife and I both like the position much better and I think it will have much more room to grow.

I wanted it up a little more, but it was getting to close to my Guardian and Earth Angel.
