Another 'Hacksaw' seedling...

Postby Pieter » Aug 10, 2015 11:32 pm

From the same batch of seeds as what 'Yellowknife' comes from, here's another one that is rather unique. Looking at the plant I think you will quickly understand the reasoning behind the name I gave it: 'Tousled Hair'. It has great substance, a wonderful unruly appearance and it has fused flowers...

There actually were a couple of flowers that showed signs of developing a pod, but, the bloody rodent got to them... I have plans to divide it in the spring and plant one division out in the yard and hopefully we can avoid the disappearing scape issue next year.

These shots are from mid-June, I'll have to make a point of taking some more pictures to show how nicely it has progressed this year.

A couple of years later it's still a choice seedling. As said the leaves have great substance to them and the leaves are nice and shiny. It had the same closed flowers last year, hopefully it'll bloom again this year and I'll have some extra pictures to add.

There were 8 scapes this year and all the flowers were fused. As you can see from the development of the middle flower in the picture there is pod development, but once they got to a certain stage they all aborted. The 2nd picture shows the pod development a bit better.

None of the flowers opened, all were fused and the vast majority have developed pods, most of which abort before they mature.
