The heron returns

Postby whis4ey » Jan 16, 2006 12:34 pm

I haven't seen a fish in my pond for over a year now. Nevertheless the heron has been returning day after day, so obviously he was seeing something
Yesterday we found fish scales in three places, and obviously off a rather big fish
These birds have the patience of Job.
Today I watched one for over an hour and it didn't appear to move a muscle :)

Such an easy target....... errrr, I mean, What a pretty bird. Bet they don't taste like chicken. :D :D
I saw one kill and eat a muskrat in my buddies pond last summer. I think they eat anything they can overpower.

Hi Sam!

Hey, if you found fish scales, does that meant the heron ate a fish and left the scales?

:) maybe it used the scales to weigh the fish and then left them for another day :-? :-? :-?

The scales we saw were those that obviously fell off the fish as it struggled in the grip of the dreaded heron, trying in vain to escape that terrible fate which lay in its very near future ...... alas, its efforts proved to be in vain, as the last pangs of hunger of the starving bird were quelled by the tasty morsel in its beak .... soon to be replaced by the sweet taste of the fresh raw fish meat.....
NOW ... where is that OTHER Sushi Bar

Ooooh, those are such nasty birds! We had one a few years ago that would help itself to fish from our pond. We have a natural lake just a block away from us with no development around it at all, just wetlands, but NOOOOOO, it has to come to our pond to eat!

I bought a statue of a crane that looks fairly close to a heron, bluish color, tall, etc. and affectionately named it "Dodo". I move it around to different areas around my pond, and since we got it, we haven't seen the heron in our pond again. It does occasionally land on our neighbor's roof and stare down at us, but never comes back into our yard.
