Pic of the Day--Prince of Wales

Postby Hank Zumach » Sep 12, 2007 9:56 am

Hi All--I have very little information to pass along about today's variety, Prince of Wales. It is a variety that is not very common in the States. I obtained my plant in 2003 from Roger Bowden who has a nursery in England and have it planted in a spot that gets dappled light and an hour or two of afternoon sun. It has had a very good growth rate with measurements starting in 2003 of 24x16, 43x20, 58x27, 44x23 (after receiving a light spray of herbicide) and a remarkable recovery of 68x28 this summer. The plant is probably best used as a background plant as the foliage is unremarkable IMHO. There has been no slug damage. The pix are from 2003, 2005 and 2007.

For starting out so squirrely, he's certainly shaped up! Is is more blue as in the 2nd pic, or green as in the 3rd?

Jane--The only year it was that blue color was in 2005. I don't have an explantation for why that happened.

This one seems appropriate today: on the announcement that the current Prince of Wales (for whom this hosta was surely named, as we know he's a hosta fan) is expecting his first grandchild, who will quite likely be a future Prince (or Princess) of Wales.
