Hosta of the Day 'Stained Glass' - Post Your Pics

Postby ViolaAnn » Aug 23, 2011 9:56 am

Today's hosta is 'Stained Glass'. Mine was new in 2004 and languished in a corner that was too dark. (Have you heard that from me before? I tried a whole bunch of hostas there until I decided to concentrate on BLUE hostas in that corner). I moved SG in 2007 and it rewarded me by blooming for the first time and has also grown much better.

This is one of our five Stained Glass hostas. I''m a little embarassed by the weeds but it just seems like there's not enough hours in the day . . . .

Here's a close-up of the flower taken a couple of days ago. For a fragrant flower, it's every so slightly more lavender than most.

Phil_and_Gayle, how old is the one that you have pictured there...that's what we're shooting for;)

We just got one of them. Obviously it's not too impressive yet. It was in full sun so it's a little bleached looking but I wanted to get pictures of the initial plant so we can keep track of it's growth.

The SG in that photo was planted in September 2007, but it was this same size last year (at 3 yrs old). The reason it's so big is because it gets quite a bit of sun there. Two of our five SG plants are in much shadier locations and they're about half that size.

We have planted ours in a location that is in "bright shade" till early afternoon, then about 3 hours of direct sun, then it gets shade again in late afternoon. I'm hoping that was a good pick for that spot.

That's pretty close to the amount of sun ours receives, so good luck with yours. We are a little further north than you, so if it seems like the afternoon sun is a little too much for your SG you could provide a little shade for it with a lawn chair (or other portable device). After the first full year in the ground you probably won't have to worry about it at all.

When ever I have seen SG over here it looks like a slightly improved Guacamole maybe noth quite the same vigour ad Guacamole tho. SG is a lot more expensive so I hav't treid it yet. My most expensive hosta recently has been Praying hands I delibertly picked one with about 5 divisions (crowns I think you call them there) I hope it does well next year, at moment planted in a rather shapely blue pot and looks fantastic. Sorry I got off the subject of SG, I'm known for that

Mine's a little worse for slug holes. This one sees a fair bit of direct sun, hence it looks quite a bit brighter than some of the others shown here.

Mark, most folk on this side of the pond refer to them, incorrectly I might add, as 'eyes'. So-called 'eyes' on a hosta are the dormant buds, as soon as those swell and send up the first leaf they go from 'eye' to 'shoot'. The 'crown' is the entire rhizome, so, any hosta plant will only have one crown, with or without shoots depending on whether it's growing or dormant, and most of the time there will be dormant buds, or eyes, as well.

The American Hosta Society has a Hosta Dictionary on their website, it makes interesting reading.

Pieter - the nature of that crown can vary widely. In some hostas it's quite solid and in order to divide the plant it's necessary to actually cut that crown into sections. In others, it's almost as if each eye or shoot has its own little crown and complete root structure and when dividing it's possible to wiggle or tease them completely apart without doing any cutting at all.

As much as I like the colors of Stained Glass, I just can't get past how sloppy it looks in the garden when larger, just like Guacamole. I may have to move mine over into my Guacamole & Fried Bananas area.... maybe it'll perk up more with some siblings :-) It's currently nestled between two rather larger Sum & Substance. I must admit, it did hold up well in the heat of this summer, however.

11th year in my garden but it languished in a dark corner for the first 3. It now looks great. I love the free-form mound. Picture July 16, 2014.
