I sure hope so, Bob! Might take 3-4 years, though.

Viktoria, you ask how sturdy is the fence I am thinking of having the climbing hydrangea on. Well it is a 6 foot high wood fence that I think is quite strong. Do you recommend this plant? Perhaps it gets too big? I had a landscape designer look at my backyard, and he suggested I plant the Porcelain Vine. I did a search on google and found a garden forum that called this vine the "evil porcelain vine." I don't think I am interested in that one! Here's a picture of my fence.

By the way, the plant creeping through the fence is an emerald gaiety euonymus from my neighbor.

That does look quite sturdy. 20 years down the road, though...how long do you plan to live?

 The hydragena will use 20 years to cover that fence.
One every 3 to 4 foot will be okay in 9 or 10 or so years.
To cover the fence I would go in a mixed direction.. some hydragenaes, and some clematis or honneysuckles- the lasts will do great the first years.
I managed to see one tiny flower on my hydragenae just before I sold my old house, at that time it have been planted 6 or 7 years and been moved once, with the root ball.
New one planted 2 years ago and I can not see any differnces.. darn it is so slow.

Pia, that is a great idea. Since the climbing hydrangea grows so slow, it makes sense to plant other vines in the meantime. Thank you for that idea.
