Again with the rain!!!!!

Postby rosemarie » May 24, 2012 3:11 pm

I was checking some of my posts in April and It was RAINING alot Then we had some unseasonal warmth and now we have had rain and the bones are yelling at me!!!!! But I potted a bunch of hosta and Heucs last fall, and the Hosta are coming up like Gangbusters and the Heucs wintered great.And I have a bunch of both that I ordered this spring and they are doing great. So I can't get out in the trees to see how things are doing out there and it is just driving me crazy We have had three solid days of rain and the weather yahoos say we have more to come. (Karma are your rain barrels running over?) The up side is that eveything is so green it hurts your eyes. It is always something and I will quit complaining. :lol:

~~~wavin'~~~~ @ Rosmarie!! You didn't get 30 minutes of solid hail did ya? My back yard is totally under water and yes the barrels are all full, still raining. Thank
goodness I cleaning them all out last week! Not a happy camper here, I'll let the photos tell the story.
I am in Minnesota right now and have experienced the downpours of which Phyllis speaks. I sure hope some of or follows me home tomorrow. It is really, really dry in NW Illinois.
Well the storm circled around again and boy did we get dumped upon again. I'll be stripping the rest of the Brugs and some of the flowers that bloomed again. My hostas are
shredded and I had to take several back to the ground they were shredded and broken, these weren't protected from the big pines. Some I just cut a leaf or two but they are a mess.
The Kiwi stems had tons of black spots due to the pelting of hail with the leaves shredded so they all got cut back, the leaves on the blue berries are totally shredded but the fruit looks
good. So much for gardening this year and no tours!!
I guess we got lucky here in Aumsville. I heard a little thunder and saw a flash of lighltening once, but my friend in Salem got a heck of a storm, a couple of big trees in Salem were shredded,which is very unusual for us!! I even managed to get out in my trees for awhile, and I haven't lost as much as I thought. But there is alot to do. :D
Sorry to hear about the hail damage, Karma and Bob. We are still waiting for rain here in Illinois, and the month-long
drought is beginning to affect the crops. I can water my hostas, but the corn is another story.
LindaP, I keep hoping this storm would stop circling around and hop over the mountains but last night was the fourth pass!! Tons of rain and this time no hail. It's a mess and I'm getting tired of the destruction I'm finding. I guess I'll have to teach you the rain dance?
We had a severe thunderstorm go through last night. Areas nearby were reporting quarter sized hail. My heart sank as I heard a few good sized chunks of hail start to hit the house, but I only heard about a dozen total. I did a quick assessment in the hosta garden this morning. Only minor damage. Most of the plants didn't even get hit. I got very lucky! We got a really nice amount of badly needed rain too.
Canas are shredded. Busted up a few hosta, one rose bush and knocked most of the flowers off the scarlet honeysuckle but the Yellow Poplar over many of the hosta took the brunt of it.
Now for the insurance bs. The two roofer's we contacted for bids say we need a new roof. The insurance company disagrees. Go figure! :roll:
The heavy stuff only lasted a few mins. I had put on a plastic hard hat to grab some of the hail and show the gkids till it started hitting the aluminum patio cover. :eek: Changed my mind fast when I saw the dents. :lol:
Just a few miles from us had baseball sized hail. That's a really nice, high end neighborhood and most of the houses have the blue tarps on the roofs now.
Oh my what mess at your end. You need a new roof and I sure hope they pay for it. Our insurance company states acts of nature aren't covered, so why pay insurance?
Well the storm circled in again last night, getting tired of this stuff. I'll be out checking on the plants today. Here is one of the hostas I was able to save, so far
no signs of leaves decay so it should be fine, just don't look to close. Keeping up with the pine needles have been a pit, yes the slug have found their way to the hostas!!
I'm with LindaP . The rain here in my part of Ohio seems to be going around us. We need rain so bad wish you could send a bit this way. Glad we have a garden hose that will stretch from one end of the property to the other. Good thing the spigot is in the middle. Takes 3 hoses. LOL The dog isnt impressed at all. The hose leaks right behind her house.
So what does insurance cover. Fire only. They covered my sisters roof after storm damage. Must be a difference in insurance. Time for a change I guess. Think I will go check my own insurance to see what it covers.
I have been getting out in my tree the last few daya and i was unpleasant;y surprised! I had people working out there and everything they helped plant was tagged. Almost all the tags are missing. And that includes the #'s on my islands (I have 18 islands) Luckily I had made what Lew called my Maps' of all of them. But when I couldn't water, I lost alot of plants. However I will start re-doing all my 'maps' and with the watering I can do now thanks to the sprinkling system my 'go to guy ' put in I think I can get alot of my plants back. I was surprised to see some plants I was sure I lost had come back. I am going to try and get out there myself, no one does our yards quite like we do, at least that has been my experience. And we are supposed to start warming up, so I will just take it slow and easy! But I do love being out in those trees, time just gets away from me. But boy my legs are barking at me tonight. I hope all this makes sense, I am tired!!! :lol:
Rosmarie, it makes plenty of sense to those of us that garden!! Missing tags, I find that the scrub jays and tree rats love to take them out. :lol:
Do take it slow today and it will all get done!
Bob and Karma, what a lot of troubles you both have,so sorry :( .. please send some of the rain, but spread it out, no hails wanted.
Here people are started to ask the insurance compagnys for recomandations of somone to rebuild their houses.. it seems to work well, the compagnies know, that if they follow the insurances, they will have no work in normal periods, so they are fair.
None of us pay insurances just for the fun of it :evil:
