Daily Hosta #2 - 'Blue Ivory' - Add your pics

Postby ViolaAnn » Nov 12, 2011 4:30 pm

The 2nd hosta for Sunday, Nov. 13 as I'm not likely to get to a computer until afternoon.

Name: H. 'Blue Ivory'

Description: Leaves are spear-shaped, powdery blue with a very wide, creamy white margin.
Size: Medium
Origin: Sport of H. 'Halcyon'
Flowers: Pale lavender flowers in July.
Added to garden: June 2010
Notes: This hosta is patented. Seems to have grown reasonably from the first year. I have some seeds from it as well which appear to be viable.

Another new one for us this year, the white edges on our Blue Ivory melted away. I moved it later in the summer to a spot where it can get some more sun, hopefully it will grow better next summer.

That was new THIS year? Must have been a large plant to start with. Lots bigger than mine.

Another one I got lucky with, it was dormant in a pot when I bought it. I was pleasantly surprised when four eyes came up.

That was a good find. Mine have been extremely slow to grow, but the color has been really nice and clean and crisp. This one tends to get bluish edges when it gets stressed out. I haven't seen edges melt on it before, though. Did you have a lot of rain this year? That was part of the problem with a few of our hostas - they just never had much of a chance for the leaves to dry out.

Chris, I really wanted a blue hosta with a white edge in this spot. When Blue Ivory failed, I tried Autumn Frost. The edges on Autum Frost melted the same way as Blue Ivory did. I'm not sure if it was the lack of sun or the maple tree roots that were the issue. That darn Maple tree is coming down this week, so I expect all of the hostas will do much better next year. That part of the garden was way too shady. And, I can't believe how fast the roots grew up into 2 feet of soil in a nearby raised bed.

This is the spot I thought about putting Barbara Ann that you were out of when I visited you in September.

Like Chris said, it's prone to loosing the edges when stressed.

It was fine the next year, but a slow grower. 'First Frost' easily outgrows it, but of course its variegation isn't what 'Blue Ivory's is.

As Chris said, slow to grow! Mine sure has been. I wonder if it would grow faster in a pot where I can give it more TLC. This picture was taken July 3, 2012 and shows no real growth. However, it is blooming - late August.

Would El Nino be a suitable alternative, it's my first year with this one and it hasn't made much growth. A small division mail order

I planted my Blue Ivory under limbed up Mugho pines in 2009. It gets filtered light. It hasn't melted out or shown signs of stress as the edges have not greened up. This pic was taken on May 23. However, the colours aren't quite as bright right now.

El Nino give you the same color combo in a faster growing plant, but the variegation isn't as striking.

Blue Ivory is very slow to multiply, and doesn't put out that much growth in a summer. We always grow them an extra year or two longer before selling a batch because 2 and even 3 year old plants just don't look like much.

Unfortunately there have been plants sold as "Blue Ivory" in boxes at places like Sam's Club and Costco which 90% of the time are not the correct plants (and are often virus infected). I've had a few discussions with people who mentioned they love their Blue Ivory and they've been growing really fast, and then when I show them what they are supposed to be or they've shared pictures we see that they were the wrong plants :(

We'll have Blue Ivory again next year (have a few potted in the nursery right now too) and they will still likely be single eye plants, even though it will be their 4th season of growth. So pretty, though, so I think it is worth the effort :D

Sure wish you could figure out a way to sell to Canada. :)

Well, Ann, we can ship to Canada, but the phyto cost (phytosanitary certificate and inspection) is really high from the state of Michigan, and that makes it not really worth it I'm afraid :(

I moved 'Blue Ivory' this year. Farther from my Linden tree and in a spot where it should get more moisture and more light. I hope it will grow faster. This is a plant I got in June 2010.

Ours has limped along as well. I start to wonder if it's worth the trouble.

Here's my Blue Ivory from last year. I grouped two together for impact, since this one's such a slow grower.

Hey, cowboy.

Murphy's law entered into the mix on that one. I posted and before I could edit it to fix the image, my laptop ran out of battery! Had to go grab my tablet and by the time I got it edited, you'd already caught me.

Thanks for looking out for me, though. I think I've got it, now.
