Daily Hosta #2 - 'Janet' - Add your pics

Postby ViolaAnn » Oct 18, 2011 5:52 am

Name: H. 'Janet'

Description: Green-margined leaves that turn from yellow-green to yellow to cream as the season progresses. (albescent)
Size: Medium (24"w x 15"h)
Origin: Sport of H. fortunei
Flowers: Lavender funnel-shaped flowers.
Added to garden: September 2005

I like Janet and the way it changes colour during the season. This year I had a sport which I separated during the season, though with its albescence, at the end of the season, it looked just like the others.

Darn, I can't believe I didn't get any shots of Janet - I got it in this season. I also got in Janet's Sister - that I have shots of. viewtopic.php?f=1&t=56804

This is about midway through the season so she still has some color. Notice the one leaf in the center (at about 2 o'clock) that looks just like Ann's sport.

'Janet' continues to do well. The sport pictured about, has mostly returned to normal; so we'll see.

I had mine in a trough and under netting to keep the animals off.

Great shot of how white it can get. How did you rig up the netting? I've had trouble with a groundhog this year. Not eating my hostas, but everything in my veggie garden.

That's been an on-going problem. The netting is just put over the trough with some tall plant in the middle to hold it up - could be an azalea in a pot. I found some little trellises at Wal-mart to raise them up also but the plants get too big and the scapes become a big issue. I found some taller "hooks" on-line cheap. I'm going to them to create a "wall" of netting. Hopefully it will keep out the rabbits and squirrels but let the plants grow. It should also let the wrens in to the eat the slugs. I'll get a picture when I rig it up.

'Janet' continues to do well for me. And the sport also continues to grow. This year I divided it because part of it was normal 'Janet' and then there were two distinctly different sports.

This shows the sport with the three divisions planted next to each other.

2015 - Aug. 13 This is my original plant. A bit of slug damage in mid-August, but it also shows the much whiter colour this plant acquires during the season.
Janet-150813s.jpg

This/these is/are the same as shown above. The division on the right emerges with big white streaks. To the left of it is one that remains solid green all season. And to the far left is mostly normal 'Janet', but there appear to be a few streaky leaves there this season as well. Photo Aug. 13.

Here is a mature specimen. Photo taken September 1, 2016 at the Montreal Botanical Gardens. It doesn't seem to have lightened up much. Perhaps that is because is it in quite a bit of shade?

Yes, I think the amount of sun does have an effect on 'Janet' and how white it gets. I love the punches of colour in your picture!

2016 update

My main plant is doing fine and there's very little change as I've had it over a decade.
Janet-2016-0805s.jpg

For the sport, the green section and those that were still 'Janet' went out to plant sales. I divided the streaked sport into several sections and grew them in pots sunk into my veggie garden for the rest of the season. Not sure yet what I'll do with them in 2017.
