Hosta of the Day - rectifolia white flower

Postby redcrx » Feb 07, 2013 12:07 pm

I debated making this plant a "Hosta of the Day" because it didn't have a "formal" name on the tag. It was just called "rectifolia white flower". I have shown pictures of it over the years. I believe it does have a name. "The Hostapedia" has a reference for a hosta called H. rectifolia 'Albiflora'. That reference points to another name H. 'Shirobana Tachi'. Both of these named references show up in the Hosta Library species pages - http://www.hostalibrary.org/species/pdf ... apart1.pdf (page 6) and seem to match my plant. The Hosta Library photo gallery has only one picture for 'Shirobana Tachi' and that is just a white flower that matches what my plant produces. (There is one problem - in "The Hostapedia" 'Shirobana Tachi' is described as a white flowered form of H. rectifolia var. chionea. I have rectifolia Chionea [I will add the reference later] and it is a totally different plant with thin leaves and thin petaled flowers that have purple anthers compared to the wide petals and green anthers of my plant. There is a reference to Schmid which I have to dig out.)

Hosta Registry -not registered
The names show-up in the database but with little information:
MyHostas - http://www.myhostas.be/db/hostas/Shirobana+Tachi
MyHostas - http://www.myhostas.be/db/hostas/rectif ... biflora%27

'Shirobana Tachi':

'Shirobana Tachi' & H. rectifolia 'Albiflora':
Hosta Library species area - http://www.hostalibrary.org/species/pdf ... apart1.pdf

I'm going to use the name rectifolia 'Albiflora' here. This series is from this last season.
It was up very early last season:

Here we see the other in the area filling in. rectifolia 'Nishiki' on the left, Aomori Setting Sun on the right. Along the bottom right edge you can see rectifolia 'Nakai' - this plant is a "look-a-like" of rectifolia Chionea mentioned above http://crab.rutgers.edu/~mchugh/frame09 ... onea'.html.

Some later pictures:
Here it is getting overshadowed by Aomori Setting Sun on the right.

Later the leaves are getting very dark. This is a reverse angle photo - Aomori Setting Sun is now on the left with rectifolia 'Nishiki' on the right

Here it is well into August with many flowers. In this photo I noticed something I hadn't picked up before - the plant may be sporting a yellow edged piece.

I cropped the photo to focus on the piece.

This is the photo that I think matches the Hosta Library 'Shirobana Tachi' photo:

And here is the Hosta Library photo of 'Shirobana Tachi':
