Daily Hosta #2 - 'Ani Machi' (aka 'Geisha') - Add your pics

Postby ViolaAnn » Nov 16, 2011 7:30 am

Name: H. 'Ani Machi' (aka H. 'Geisha')

Description: Known for its variegated foliage. Its glossy leaves have either bright yellow or chartreuse centres with dark green borders and grow with a twist on the end.
Size: Small
Origin: thought to be H. siedoldii x H. rectifolia
Flowers: Bell-shaped lavender flowers in August.
Added to garden: spring 2006
Notes: This one is always waving in the breeze. I find it difficult to photograph. This is another which is a lot more yellow when it emerges and then darkens. This plant was completely divided in the spring of 2011 and a number of divisions sold. I replanted the remaining ones in three groups which gives the impression of a larger plant than it actually is. Next year, I expect it to be much fuller.

Registry - The hosta registered under the name 'Geisha' is believed to no longer exits. What is frequently sold under the name 'Geisha', is in fact 'Ani Machi' - http://www.hostaregistrar.org/detail.ph ... ni%20Machi

Hosta Library - Not listed as 'Ani Machi'. You'll find it erroneously under 'Geisha'. http://www.hostalibrary.org/g/geisha.html

Note - there was another post with links to Photobucket pictures. Unfortunately, those pictures had been moved so there was no longer any content to the post; so I removed them.

I'm posting MY last pictures of 'Ani Machi' because a few days ago, my plant tested positive for HVX. I suspect that it may have been positive from the time I got it in 2006, but never showed symptoms that I pick up on. Even this year, I wasn't sure and studied a leaf in my kitchen for a couple of days before deciding to run the test.

The first pic is my plant just before I dug it out and destroyed it.

Unfortunately closer looks at the older pictures shows that it was infected with HVX all along. It just took a couple extra years for it to really show up more. :(

We still sell this as Geisha because it sells 100% better with that name than when we've listed it as Ani Machi, but we still list both names.

Just proves why we still need to be vigilant about cleaning tools - especially when dealing with plants bought 2005-2007 or so before everyone knew what they were dealing with.

Sorry to hear that it has HVX. I keep an eye out for it on mine too. This year I am worried about a few but with so much frost damage I will wait till next year and check it again. The one I am mostly concerned about is a Queen Josephine that is no longer shiny.

I was just working on a Hosta of the Day for Geisha Satin Ripples which is the all green form of Ani Machi and noticed a similarity to "two" others I was just working on - Kisuji and Inaho. Ani Machi looks like a stabilized green edged form of Kisuji/Inaho. And the flowers are virtually identical in time, size, color and striping.
