Hosta of the Day - rectifolia Chionea

Postby redcrx » Jul 24, 2014 3:32 pm

This is a messy topic.

I have a few plants with different names that look the same. In my garden rectifolia Chionea looks just like rectifolia Nikai and Rohdeifolia. None of these names are registered. But in the MyHosta database there is a reference to a registered hosta called Ginbuchi Tachi where is states "Japanese name for H. rectifolia 'Chionea'?". In Chris's comment section of the hosta Silver Star he mentions:
Comments: This sport of Hosta rectifolia is known as Hosta 'Ginbuchi Tachi' in Japan but has been renamed Hosta 'Silver Star' in the US to distinguish it from the registered plant of Hosta 'Ginbuchi Tachi' which differs significantly from the hosta we are selling.

MyHosta Database reference about Nakai - "Probably the same as rectifolia 'Chionea'."

And calling rectifolia Nakai a "species".

Here they are in my garden. The flowers are the same also. I will post them next.

Never heard of any of these and have never seen pictures of them. They look to be tiny and very cute.

H. rohdeifolia was always one of those suspicious species. I expect these will be different in flower. Rohdeifolia ("the hosta with leaves like a rohdea") has absurdly tall flower scapes for the plant size. For years it may have been sold as H. helonioides 'albopicta', which may or may not be the same as the ones you list... They have different names in Japanese, too.

Here are some photos today.

The rectifolia Chionea is not doing to well. it should be bigger.

Here are Rohdeifolia and rectifolia Nakai as they are both putting up scapes.
