Hosta of the Day - Orange Rose

Postby redcrx » Nov 20, 2014 8:26 am

Orange Rose is a bright yellow-centered sport of Gypsy Rose with a thin green edge.

This is one of my Striptease family sports. I have shown this plant many times on this forum over the years - viewtopic.php?f=1&t=56881&p=489511&hilit=orange+rose#p489511

I discovered this sport growing in a little garden center that had a bunch of Gypsy Rose plants. The sport "jumped-out" at me because it looked orange among all the green - that's where the name came from.

Here is Orange Rose in 2010.

Orange Rose in the 2012 season

A very leafy scape starting to show - you can see the white on the back of the leaf, typical of this branch of the fortunei family (I never noticed if it's on the Francee side of the family - OK, the MyHostas database says it is).

In general it has a thinner edge but the big thing is it can handle sun better - something it gets from its Gypsy Rose mom.

Here are some photos of a small piece in 2012 highlighting the thin edge.

I have been hunting for two pots of this and finally found one of them today. This is the one shown in the last post that I took out of the ground and potted to keep the voles away from it.

My main plant is planted it a group of Striptease sports shown above. That entire garden looks bad this season. The crowns are gone and I have a bunch of small pieces starting up like big seedlings. Might be voles or some kind of root competition - I saw this from a holly bush a while ago - the holly's gone but there is/was a Crape Myrtle in there that I just took out. I replanted the best of the pieces in baskets and potted the others.
I didn't take out the Blue without You on the right yet.

Here is a photo of the pot I can't find from last year.
