I became a hosta lover following a garden tour in 1999. I visited a local garden featuring about 150 varieties of hosta. The owner invited me back and on the return visit I made my first list of must haves and "great" spots to shop for hosta in New England. I was off in running.

Twelve years ago my landscape was a bare canvas, however now it is home to a large perennial border growing my daylily, allium and poppy collections... and numerous shade gardens hosting about 325 different hosta. The shade gardens are the real story and always a work in progress.

There is nothing like mail order - best hosta I can buy thanks to places like Hallson's. My favorite hosta are all the blues, plus I love the minis. I'm still focused on adding to my very limited collection of ruffled edges.

I am on a mission to educate the world about Hosta Virus X. I keep plenty of handouts in the car when I travel to garden centers...just in case I see....which is becoming more frequent of late.

On a personal note, I have a 2008 college graduate (YIPEE), one lifetime college student (at least it feels that way to me), and a husband that digs garden beds, does laundry and cooks. Life is good!

Loved reading your story. I had two kids in college at the same time, so I know how rough that can be, especially on the budget. Fortunately my DD has graduated and my DS is a senior this coming year, so the end is in sight!! Hoping to travel some after the bills are paid down.

You've got a wonderful list of hostas. Hard to believe now that you use to dislike hostas. When the hosta bug hits, it hits hard!

Thank you Joan. I took a look at your hosta list and mine certainly doesn't compare. How do you find space for that many hosta? I am enjoying the forums and love my hosta. However, my family is finding it difficult to understand my enthusiasm for these leafy plants. My daughters think that all my hosta look the same. My husband has suggested that I belong to a cult. lol My mother feels that I should keep some grass in the yard. I simply believe that my obsession will pass when I hit the 100 mark.

Please post photos. I used to live in Amesbury and I learned to drive in downtown Newburyport. My father frequented to marinas there so we were there nearly every weekend. Since moving out of New England for college I've been very homesick for it. There is nowhere else like it.

I have a lot of relatives that have migrated south to Florida, plus my parents live 7 months of the year on Big Pine Key. I like the pics I saw of your lovely cat Spider. She must have meant a lot to you.

I was in Amesbury on Friday night, downtown along the Pow Wow River - they (the town) did a nice job restoring and replanting the banks of the river that were washed out (lots of lost trees) in the floods last year.

I had wondered about that river last year, it runs right under the stores that are there - paticularly the drug store that was there when I lived there. The river went right under the back left corner of it.
