Ground cover for shade

These perennial plants work well as ground covers for shady areas. Other plants such as Hostas can also work as a thick groundcover when planted in masses, but these plants tend to spread on their own so work well as a ground cover.

Asarum canadense

Asarum canadense, Canadian wild ginger, is a native woodland plant with satiny and fuzzy, medium green heart shaped leaves with brown-purple flowers at soil level. It grows 6 to 10" high and spreads 24" or more to make a great shady groundcover.

    Asarum europaeum, European ginger, is a handsome, shady groundcover with glossy, dark, evergreen leaves with brown-purple flowers at soil level. It grows 3 to 5" high and 12" wide, spreaading by seed to make a great shady groundcover.

    Convallaria 'Rosea'

    Convallaria 'Rosea', pink lily of the valley, is a dense, fast spreading groundcover with 2 to 3 broad leaves and upright stems of dainty, bell-shaped, fragrant pink flowers in spring. They grow 6 to 8" tall; space 15 to 18".

    Convallaria majalis is the white lily of the valley that we all seem to remember from our childhood. It is a dense, fast spreading groundcover with 2 to 3 broad leaves and upright 6 to 8" stems of dainty, bell-shaped, fragrant white flowers in spring.

    Corydalis lutea

    Corydalis lutea has many long blooming, soft yellow flowers above 15" clumps of lacy blue-green foliage. It is hardy, easy to grow, and self-sows freely, making it useful as a ground cover, especially in dry shade.

    Epimedium 'Frohnleiten'

    Epimedium 'Frohnleiten' is a slow spreading variety of barrenwort with bright yellow flowers in early spring over bronze-pink foliage that turns dark green in summer and back to bronze in the fall. It is easy to grow so long as the rhizomes are planted and covered with some good soil and it receives occasional moisture. It grows 8 to 12" high and 18 to 24" wide.
