Iris foetidissima

Iris foetidissima is a shade loving iris with small pale lavender flowers in the summer and in the fall the large seed pods open to reveal attractive orange to scarlet seeds. They grow 24" high and the foliage stays green year round. Although they prefer rich, moist but well-drained soil they are very adaptable and quite drought tolerant once established.

Though many references list this Iris as only being hardy to zone 6 or 7, we've grown this plant for over 10 years in our zone 5 Michigan gardens without any winter dieback, and the foliage stays evergreen over the winter.

Height: 24" Spacing: 15 - 18" apart
Light: Light sun to full (dappled) shade Soil: Humus-rich, moist but well-drained
Bloom Time: Summer with attractive fall seeds Zones: 5 - 9
