Actaea 'Misty Blue'

Actaea 'Misty Blue' forms a 2 to 3 foot multi-stemmed clumping mound of soft blue-green foliage that is topped with clusters of white flowers in summer followed by white berries in fall. It is a native plant that thrives in the rich but dry, woodland garden.

    Asplenium scolopendrium 'Angustatum'

    Asplenium scolopendrium 'Angustatum' is a narrow, ruffled form of Hart's tongue fern with 6 to 12" long, glossy green, evergreen fronds with crimped, ruffled edges. It is hardy and very attractive but slow to develop, so may not work in every garden.  Syn. Asplenium s. 'Angustifolia'.

    Athyrium 'Pearly White'

    Athyrium 'Pearly White' is a Japanese painted fern without the usual purple overlay, giving it a creamy white glow in the shade garden.  Plant it in the shade as direct sunlight can burn the foliage, however it will make a beautiful focal point with dark hostas or other dark leaf plants.  It grows 15" high and wide.

    Athyrium 'Victoriae'

    Athyrium 'Victoriae' is a very attractive lady fern with deep green fronds and criss-crossing pinnae, coming to a point with a crested tip, giving it the common name of the criss-cross lady fern. It forms an upright, arching clump, 18 to 24" high and wide.

    Brunnera 'Alexander's Great'

    Brunnera 'Alexander's Great' forms a larger plant than Brunnera 'Jack Frost', with larger leaves that make an impressive statement in the shade garden. Silvery heart-shaped leaves have green veining and are topped with tiny, sky blue forget-me-not like flowers in spring.  It forms a 30" wide clump. (PP#25789)

    Cimicifuga 'Brunette'

    Cimicifuga 'Brunette' has creamy white flowers opening from pale pink buds on 4' spikes in the fall over dark green to bronze/black foliage. The bottlebrush spikes provide a nice vertical accent in the woodland garden, though give them some bright morning sun for the darkest foliage.

    Cimicifuga 'Cheju Do' (also listed as Actaea 'Cheju Do') has basal clumps of glossy, dark green dissected leaves topped in mid to late summer with multiple spikes of pink buds that open to starry white flowers.  The foliage stays compact at about 18" high and the flower spikes will reach 3' high.

    Dicentra 'King of Hearts' is a dwarf, fern-leaf bleeding heart with fine, blue-green foliage forming a 6 to 8" mound that is topped with heart-shaped pink flowers from spring to fall! Plant in good, well-drained, relatively dry soil.

    Dryopteris goldiana

    Dryopteris goldiana is the largest of the Eastern native wood ferns, reaching 4' high in ideal conditions.  It has stately, bold fronds that are green with a hint of golden yellow, and it spreads slowly to form a large cluster.  It is best in moist woods, preferably in a sheltered, cool location.

    Dryopteris intermedia

    Dryopteris intermedia is hardy Eastern native fern with a delicate look.  The leaflets are lobed and toothed, giving it a lacy appearance that is quite attractive in the garden.  It is easy to grow in moist soil in part to full shade, growing about 24" high and 36" wide.

    Epimedium 'Frohnleiten'

    Epimedium 'Frohnleiten' is a slow spreading variety of barrenwort with bright yellow flowers in early spring over bronze-pink foliage that turns dark green in summer and back to bronze in the fall. It is easy to grow so long as the rhizomes are planted and covered with some good soil and it receives occasional moisture. It grows 8 to 12" high and 18 to 24" wide.

    Polystichum aculeatum, Hard Sheild fern, has 24 to 36" dark green arching fronds with spiny, pointed leaflets. It is a clumping fern that multiplies slowly but is also rugged and evergreen, with only some winter dieback in the coldest conditions.

    Tricyrtis 'Samurai'

    Tricyrtis 'Samurai' has been the most vigorous variegated toad lily we have grown to date. The wide margined, yellow to cream edged foliage looks great through the summer and in August into the fall each stem is topped with branching, lavender tipped and purple spotted, cream colored flowers. It grows 18" high and prefers well-drained, woodland type soil in open shade.
