Asarum europaeum - European ginger
Asarum europaeum, European ginger, is a handsome, shady groundcover with glossy, dark, evergreen leaves with brown-purple flowers at soil level. It grows 3 to 5" high and 12" wide, spreaading by seed to make a great shady groundcover. It combines well with hostas, ferns, pulmonaria, and astilbe, but also does well on its own when allowed to naturalize. Though it spreads by seed the new plants are easy to weed out or move about and it isn't overly invasive.
