Asclepias tuberosa (butterfly weed)

This native wildflower has flat orange flower clusters that bloom in early to mid summer at the tops of tall stems with green, lance shaped foliage. In Michigan they grow along hot and dry, sandy banks and slopes where the orange color jumps right out at you among the native grasses. They are long lived and drought tolerant, plus they are a food source for some butterfly larvae and they attract a wide assortment of adult butterflies. It is not necessary to water these after planting.

Height: 24 - 30" Spacing: 15 - 18" apart
Light: Full sun to part sun Soil: Sandy loam, dry and well-draining
