Aster oblongifolius 'October Skies'

Aster oblongifolius, known as aromatic aster, forms a large mound of fine, sweetly scented foliage that is covered with many 1/2" flowers for several weeks in the fall. The clumps are dense spreading and are beautiful when grown in masses. Aster o. 'October Skies' has light purplish-blue petals surrounding a yellow center. They are easy to grow and clump best in lean, well-drained soil. Soil that is too rich may cause them to grow quite large and bloom so heavy that they flop. Combine them with ornamental grasses, mums and sedum for great late season color.

Height: 24 - 36" Spacing: 24" apart
Light: Full sun to part sun Soil: Average, well-draining
Bloom Time: Late summer and fall Zones: 4 - 8

This is probably the best clumping aster I've grown. It has been carefree, free flowering, and is just spectacular in the fall. When I used to grow the new england asters they would self seed so much that it was almost unbearable, plus they flopped over in almost every place I tried them. Although this aster might flop over in a bed of almost pure compost it stays perfectly mounding in somewhat leaner soil and stays compact in poor soil. A clump of 3 plants will form a mound about 2' tall and about 4' around.
