Baptisia australis is a large, shrub-like perennial with purplish-blue flowers in early summer on 2' tall spikes over bushy mounds of soft, blue-green foliage. Each clump grows about 3' tall by 3' wide and makes a nice background plant in the sunny garden.

Baptisia is a member of the legume family so it has a pea-like flower and rounded leaves like sweet peas and lupines. It grow to shrub-like proportions but dies back to the ground each winter. It grows from a very deep taproot and will develop a massive root system over time, but can be moved successfully when dormant in the spring and fall.
