Dryopteris celsa - log fern

Dryopteris celsa, or log fern, has tall, upright fronds with narrow, pointed, lightly toothed leaflets that develop a nice dark green color in rich, acidic soil. It needs consistent moisture for the best height but is very adaptable and easy to grow. In the wild it can be found in swamps and wet woods on rotting logs but it is surprisingly drought tolerant in the garden. It grows and colonizes slowly from a horizontal, creeping rhizome.

Height: 36 - 48" Spacing: 18 - 24" apart
Light: Part shade to full shade Soil: Humus-rich, moist
pH: Slightly acidic to neutral Zones: 5 - 9
