Hosta 'Abiqua Drinking Gourd'

(Walden-West 1989)

Clump Size: (ML) 36" x 24"

Leaf Size: 8" x 7.5" -- Vein Pairs: 15

Description: Dark, blue-green leaves have a glaucous bloom and are cupped, nearly round, with heavy substance. The clump grows somewhat upright so that you can see the white backs on some of the leaves. This hosta has some of the deepest cupped leaves of any hosta plant.

Blooms: Near white flowers bloom just above the leaves in early August.

Comments: This hybrid of H. 'Tokudama' x H. sieboldiana can make an impressive specimen but takes some time to reach maturity. Plants are best grown in full shade as the extreme cupped leaves have a tendency to collect water which can burn through easily when planted in too much sun. They also hold their blue color best in more shade. Makes an excellent specimen when given deep, rich soil and plenty of time.

Light: Part shade to full shade. -- Soil: Humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil.
