Hosta 'Corn Belt'

(Anderson/Winterberry Farms)

Clump Size: (L) 40" x 26"

Leaf Size: 9" x 7" -- Vein Pairs: 13 - 15

Description: This hosta forms a large cascading mound of yellow leaves with a slightly wavy, wide green edge.

Blooms: Lavender flowers bloom in summer.

Comments: Hosta 'Corn Belt' was introduced by Jim Anderson of Winterberry Farms, reported to be a green edged sport of Hosta 'Jimmy Crack Corn'. There is some doubt as to the true parentage, and to make the parentage complication worse, when we received plants from their original tissue culture run during one of the last years they were in business, more than half the batch was actually mixed up with a different yellow centered plant which we believe may have been Hosta 'Captain Kirk' or something similar. As we grew out the liners, one form developed a larger cascading mound with wavy leaves and the other a more medium-large, open mound with smooth edged leaves. In more recent years we also believe that this second, presumably incorrect form was again put into production at other labs, leading to many more incorrect plants out on the market today.

While we still aren't sure if the original was ever a sport of Hosta 'Jimmy Crack Corn', we do feel that these few divisions we are selling from the original tissue culture runs done years ago are the plant that Jim Anderson meant to introduce and not the second mixed up plants that were also sold. The plant pictured here is from this original batch and the divisions we are selling reflect this form.
