Hosta 'Elegans'

(Arends/Hylander/AHS 2002)

Clump Size: (L) 61" x 28"

Leaf Size: 15.5" x 11" -- Vein Pairs: 16 - 18

Description: Thick, corrugated, blue-green leaves form a very large mound.

Blooms: Near white flowers bloom just above the foliage in June and July.

Comments: First introduced in 1905, Hosta sieboldiana 'Elegans' is the grand daddy of all of the large blue-green hostas. It is very slow growing but forms a very large mound in time. Locally it is known as the "elephant ear hosta", and that nickname is becoming more and more common.  This is one of those 15/20 year plants...  Give it 15 to 20 years in the garden and it will be a standout.

Light: Part shade to full shade. -- Soil: Humus-rich, moist soil.

Related Plants: American Halo, Barbara Ann, Frances Williams, Golden Meadows, Great Expectations, Northern Exposure, Thunderbolt

Zones: 2 - 8
