Hosta 'Oshima Silk'

(Zilis 2009)

Clump Size: (SM) 24" x 10"

Leaf Size: 9" x 4" -- Vein Pairs: 7 - 8

Description: This small to medium sized hosta has spear-shaped, shiny green leaves with an attractive, relatively wide but variable cream to white edge.

Blooms: Near blue, bell-shaped flowers bloom in August.

Comments: Although this hosta's name was registered in 2009 by Mark Zilis, the plant that was registered is not the same as the plant that was produced in tissue culture. What was supposed to be a light green, rounded, ripple edged hosta with a thin cream border and very white back ended up being sold as the plant we are offering here - and it wasn't cheap. Looking back at the original photograph included in many catalogs for Hosta 'Oshima Silk', and comparing it to the plant we grew over several years, we knew we did not have the right plant, so we contacted Q & Z Nursery to find out what had happened. It turns out that nobody seemed to know what happened to the plant that was registered, and everyone selling Hosta 'Oshima Silk' was simply selling the plant that was sold to them. The final answer we received was that since nobody knew what happened to the original plant, and this was the only example of Hosta 'Oshima Silk' on the market, then we should just sell it as Hosta 'Oshima Silk'.

Being a bit of a purist I almost threw these all away, but then visitors kept asking about it. It really is a very nice plant in its own right. It grows great, has beautiful flowers, and holds up very well through the summer. We simply never had trouble with it and people liked it. Then in the summer of 2016 we divided up all of our stock, grew them in our production greenhouse, and were stunned to notice that it has near blue flowers. We would take people down to our production area just to ask if they were seeing the same thing and they agreed, this hosta had blue flowers. We are glad we kept them, and hope you enjoy them as much as we do!
