Hosta 'Smurfette'

(Wilson/Hallson Gardens 2017)

Clump Size: (SM) 24" x 12"

Leaf Size: 6" x 4" -- Vein Pairs: 10 - 11

Description: Thick, oval leaves are very blue with a fairly wide, slightly wavy, creamy-white to white margin, forming a small to medium sized clump.

Blooms: Lavender flowers bloom on attractive purple spotted scapes in late summer.

Comments: Hosta 'Smurfette' is a Hallson Gardens introduction selected from a batch of tissue culture plants out of Hosta 'El Nino' (PP#14632).  It has a wider margin than its parent and the edge has a slight wave to it, plus the clumps have always stayed smaller than any of its parents that we've grown.  From that same batch of tissue culture plants there were likely other plants the same as this one which we sold as Hosta 'El Nino' before recognizing the difference. Hosta 'Smurfette' differs from Hosta 'Blue Ivory' by having a much better growth rate and the margin tends to stay a much cleaner, crisper white color through the summer.  Please note that tissue culture propagation of this or any of our other introductions without permission is forbidden.

Light: Light sun to full shade. -- Soil: Humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil.

Related Plants: El Nino, Halcyon

Zones: 2 - 8
