Hosta 'Sum and Substance'

(F. Shaw 1980)

Clump Size: (VL) 60" x 30"

Leaf Size: 20" x 15" -- Vein Pairs: 16 - 17

Description: One of the grand-daddies of the giant hostas, this plant has huge rounded, thick, puckered leaves that emerge chartreuse and brighten to yellow as the season progresses. Give this hosta plenty of moisture, lots of deep, rich soil, then plenty of room.

Blooms: Lavender flowers bloom in late July and early August.

Comments: Hosta 'Sum and Substance' is fairly sun tolerant plus becomes brighter yellow when grown in some sun. It needs regular moisture but has the potential to be one of the largest hostas you will grow. Named Hosta of the Year for 2004.

Light: Part sun to full shade. -- Soil: Rich, consistently moist but well-drained.

Related Plants: Jaz, Sum It Up, Sum of All, Titanic, Vim and Vigor, Winter Snow, and many others

Zones: 2 - 9
