Matteuccia struthiopteris 'The King'

Ostrich ferns have large, upright, deep green fronds that form a distinct vase shape along with 6 to 12" tall fertile fronds that rise up from the center of the crowns turning dark brown by the end of the summer. They are native to swampy areas and enjoy consistent moisture for best growth and performance yet spread vigorously from underground runners in almost any growing conditions.

Matteuccia struthiopteris 'The King' is a selection of the native Ostrich fern that loves rich, moist soil in the shade and in ideal conditions can reach 7 feet tall.  It does well in the South where the regular Ostrich ferns fail to thrive and they spread readily from underground rhizomes which can be good or bad depending on the situation.

Height: 36 - 72" Spacing: 18 - 24" apart or more
Light: Part shade to full shade Soil: Humus-rich, consistently moist for best growth
pH: Slightly acidic to slightly alkaline Zones: 2 - 9
